PERSONAL AGENT FIELD NOTES

Skills and MCP: what does your personal agent actually need?

One gives your agent a method. The other connects it to tools and information.

Start with the task

Describe the outcome you want from your personal agent. Then ask two questions: does it know a good way to do the work, and can it access what the work requires?

A skill supplies a method

A skill packages instructions and may include scripts, templates, and references. Think of a repeatable document workflow or a way to organize your notes. The specific skill still needs to fit your agent and its available tools.

MCP supplies a connection

An MCP server can expose tools and information to a compatible agent. For example, it can let your agent search a workspace or retrieve content from a service. A connection and a working end-to-end workflow are different things.

They can work together

A research skill might describe how to compare sources, while an MCP server retrieves those sources. Start with the smallest combination that completes your actual task.

For Grok

Check which Grok product you are using. Grok Build skills, Grok connectors, and API integrations have different setup requirements. This library links to the source and records untested compatibility explicitly.
